What is a Breaktape medal?
What your digital medal is, where it comes from and why anyone can trust it.
A Breaktape medal is a digital medal with your name on it, made for you by the organiser of your event. It celebrates your finish, your time and your race, and it's yours to keep for life.
Where it comes from
Your medal comes from the people who ran your event, not from Breaktape. Breaktape is the service they use to make and send it.
- You finish your event.
- The timing company produces the official results, and the organiser marks them as final.
- The organiser checks the medals and releases them.
- Your medal arrives by email, from the organiser's name "via Breaktape". The subject line is something like Your Riverside Half Marathon medal.
Medals are only ever made from final, official results. A provisional time on the finish line clock never becomes a medal.
What's on it
Each medal is designed by your organiser, so they all look different. Most show:
- your name
- the event, the race and the year
- your finish time, if the event was timed
- your position and category, if the organiser includes them
In your trophy cabinet, your medal also shows the date, the place, your wave if there was one, and any splits the timing company recorded.
If a charity sent you a medal to say thank you, it shows a line such as "Raised £400" instead of a time. See If a charity sent you a medal.
Why anyone can trust it
Every medal is signed when it's issued. Anyone you show it to can open its verification page and see that it's genuine and that it matches what the organiser issued. A picture someone made themselves won't pass that check. See Checking a medal is genuine.
Yours for life
Tap Keep your medal in the email and it goes into your trophy cabinet, alongside every other Breaktape medal you keep, whoever organised the event. You choose who sees it: share it with everyone, hide your surname or time, or keep it private.
Good to know
- You don't need an account before your event. Your account starts the first time you keep a medal.
- You don't need a password. You sign in with a 6-digit code sent to your email.
- If your result is ever corrected, you get an updated medal, and the old link points to the new one.
- Breaktape medals are digital. Physical medals are handled by your event organiser.
- Apple Wallet and Google Wallet passes aren't available yet.
