Medals for under-13s

How thank-you medals and event medals work for children under 13, who are always private and kept by a parent or guardian.

Children do amazing things for charities: bake sales, sponsored silences, their first fun run. They deserve a medal too. Breaktape gives them one, but keeps it private: a child under 13 never gets a public page or an account of their own. Their parent or guardian receives the medal and keeps it for them.

Giving a thank-you medal to a child

On the one-person form:

  1. Fill in the child's First name, and Last name if you like. This is the name that goes on the medal.
  2. In Email, put their parent's or guardian's email address, not the child's.
  3. Add a Line on the medal if you'd like, such as "Raised £85 with a bake sale".
  4. Tick They're under 13. Their medal stays private, with no public page, and the parent or guardian keeps it for them.
  5. Check the preview, then choose Send medal.

In a list, add an Under 13 column (or U13, or Child) and put yes for each child. Leave it empty or put no for everyone else. Use the parent's or guardian's email in the email column. When the list is checked, children show an Under 13 label so you can make sure you've got them right.

Children at your event

For a walk or fun run, the race's Who takes part setting decides how ages are handled:

  • Mixed ages: under-18s may take part. Each person's age is read from their category in your file, like U13 or V40, and under-13s' medals are always private and kept by a guardian.
  • Junior race: a race for young people. Medals start private, and under-13s' medals are kept by a guardian.
  • Adults only: everyone is 18 or over.

It has to be set before any medals are released. If children might take part, choose Mixed ages and include a category column.

What the parent or guardian gets

The email goes to the address you gave, with the child's medal and a Keep your medal button. When they keep it with the 6-digit code sent to their email, the medal goes into their own trophy cabinet, under Medals you hold for and the child's first name. Those medals are marked "always private", and only the guardian can see them.

What stays private

  • There's no public medal page and no share images. If someone tries to share, they see that medals for children under 13 are always private.
  • The child never gets an account or signs in.
  • Sponsors aren't shown, because there's no medal page to show them on.
  • The verify page still confirms the medal is genuine, but shows only the award or event and who gave it, not the child's name.

On your awards page, these medals show a Private label under Given recently, and they don't link to a public page.

Good to know

  • Double-check the tick box or the Under 13 column before you send. A medal sent without it is public. If that happens, email support@breaktape.com straight away.
  • The email greets the child by name, so the parent or guardian can show it to them.
  • For more detail on age settings at events, see Age policy and under-13s.
