Setting up awards
How to set up thank-you awards, name your first award and find its starter medal design.
Awards are how you give thank-you medals when there's no race day. Setting them up takes a minute: you give your awards a name, name the first award, and Breaktape makes a starter medal design you can send from straight away or change first.
Set up your awards
- Go to Events.
- Choose Set up awards. (If you have no events yet, the link is in the middle of the page. On Add an event there's also a link: Set up awards instead.)
- Fill in Name. This is what you're thanking people for, like "Volunteer thank-yous" or "Fundraising heroes". It appears around the top of the medal and at the top of the email.
- Fill in First award. It starts as "Thank you", and it's shown at the top of the medal. You could change it to something like "Volunteer of the year". You can add more awards later.
- Choose Set up awards.
You land on your awards page, with a note saying Awards set up.
What's on your awards page
Your awards also appear on the Events page, marked Thank-you medals. Open them to see each award as a card with:
- a preview of its medal, showing "Their name" and a sample line, "Raised £400"
- how many medals it has given this year, and in all
- the name of its design
- Give a medal, to send one medal or upload a list
- Edit the design, to change how the medal looks
Below the cards you'll see Given recently, a list of the latest medals and how each one is doing, and a box to Add another award.
The starter design
Each award gets its own design, named after the award (for example "Thank you medal"). The starter design is:
- round, with a tape red ribbon and an ink rim
- your awards' name around the top of the rim
- a star in the centre
- the award's name above the centre
- the person's name and their line below the centre
- the year around the bottom of the rim
It's ready to use as it is. To change the colours, the shape, the centre or the fields, choose Edit the design. See Designing your thank-you medal.
Then give your first medal
When you're happy, choose Give a medal. You can send to one person, or upload a list of people. See Giving a medal to one person and Sending medals to a list of people.
Good to know
- Only admins and editors can set up awards and give medals. Viewers and finance staff see the awards page but not the Give a medal button.
- The name can be up to 120 characters, and each award's name up to 60, so it fits on the medal.
- Awards run by the calendar year. The year on the medal is the year you give it. See Adding more awards, and the new year.
- An awards event can't be changed into a race event later. For a walk or fun run, see Charity walks and challenge events.
- If something went wrong while setting up, the page says "The awards weren't set up" and tells you what to fix.
